I did a "temporary" kitchen refresh about 10 years ago...

...and painted my existing cabinets in place. I hand-rolled the boxes with a foam roller, and the finished product looked about like what you'd expect - even, but slightly textured surface. It was fine for a makeshift facelift until we totally gotten the kitchen a couple of years ago. For the doors/drawer fronts, I took them to a local paint shop and had them spray them with a product called Devflex. They turned out really well, and the paint held up incredibly well (even being white). In fact, it held up so well that I was able to sell the cabinets for a few hundred bucks when I removed them during my recent full remodel.

As for doing this yourself, unless you have a large workshop or garage where you can lay everything out and spray it all at one time, I'd recommend just hiring a painter to do it. I don't think the cost will be that much, and if you're going to have to purchase a paint sprayer to do it yourself, the net cost will be even smaller.
